Navy Seals Give Terrorist Barbarian A Bloody Lip And Face Court Marial: Have We Lost Our Minds??

Forgive me for once again interrupting my consideration of Health Care Reform, but, unfortunately, intervening events do happen, and some of them require attention. Once such event is the recent decision to court martial 3 Navy Seals who captured the ring-leader of the group that tortured, mutilated, burned and, of course, killed 4 Blackwater employees (a graphic view of their handiwork was all over the internet; it gives you a good idea of the type of savages that we are dealing with). The Seals chose Court Martial rather than be disciplined for their behavior, i.e. roughing up this scumbag and giving him a bloody lip — the nerve of these guys! I don’t know about you, but I find this not just disgraceful but another marker in the damage and destruction that is being visited on our society via political correctness. In any event, the treatment of these brave men moved me to write our Secretary of Defense (in the hope, albeit a dim one, that my missive might get through to him). I hope that you will find this event equally disturbing and will visit your displeasure on your Congressman, Senators, and various other public servants (are there any of those left?).

To assist you in this undertaking, I offer a copy of the letter that I transmitted to the good Secretary:

Re: Proposed Court Martial for Navy Seal Heroes?

Dear Secretary Gates:

I recently read (with disbelief) of the pending court martial of 3 of our Navy Seals; the alleged criminal conduct? — punching a murderous terrorist in the stomach and bloodying his lip. Wow! I do not mean to take liberties here, but I find it difficult to think that my country is rewarding its heroes in this manner. Frankly, sir, based on what this man did — and the fruits of his labors are all over the internet for all to see the grizzly outcome of this monster’s mayhem — I am amazed that our boys even bothered to take him prisoner; under Patton, they would not have wasted their time. Killing him would be a service to humanity; our boys showed admirable restraint (for which they deserve a medal, not a court martial).

I cannot believe that we have been reduced to this sorry state of affairs. We are at war! And war, at best, is a killing business; the present war is worse than any we have fought in the past for we are dealing with a bunch of backward barbarians who revel in our death and destruction. When you train our young men for the dangerous and deadly undertakings that our Seals must be prepared to carry out, you do not ask them to first pull out their copy of Emily Post before making a decision as to the appropriate disposition to make of an enemy combatant. The fact that these gentlemen — our most treasured capital — exercised sufficient restraint to take this monster into custody (and not kill him) is a mark of incredible discipline. To punish them for allegedly exercising excessive force in doing so would be a travesty. To consider such a prospect makes me cringe with embarrassment for my country if this is how far we have fallen in defending it.

I thought that Abu Ghraib was blown way out of perspective, and I was shocked by the decision to try Guantanamo prisoners in civilian courts. I was also more than just taken aback when our Homeland Security people took the position that we are not at war with terror (just dealing with an overseas contingency operation) and, as a consequence, there are no terrorists, just man caused disasters. All of this struck me as something out of the theatre of the absurd. But nothing has so offended me as the treatment proposed for these young Seals. Has the United States taken leave of its senses? Has our spinal column been removed? Have we no sense of proportion in viewing wartime conduct? Sir, forgive me for pressing my point, but if charges against these Seals are not dropped, I fear that we shall not just have suffered a monumental defeat in pursuing this war, we shall have conveyed to our enemies the message that we are more concerned with amenities than survival. More to the point, we shall convey to our citizens that we have no understanding of the danger that confronts America. And, most important of all, we shall have sent a message to our young men and women in the military, that America does not stand behind them. Indeed, who would want to go into a fighting force that no longer understands how to fight? Why would a youngster want to serve in a life and death struggle when he had to constantly look over his shoulder to make certain that he was not exceeding the military’s protocol for good manners?

There is something in this travesty that is so out of keeping with what America is all about as to boggle the mind. Please look into this, sir, and right this wrong before incalculable damage is done to our society. Thanking you for your assistance on this matter, I am a very concerned citizen,

We cannot continue to allow travesties of this nature to continue to take place — not without suffering irreparable damage to the very fabric of our society. Thanks for your help.
